Local Attraction: Kraynaks, Christmasland

Traditions are awesome to have.  Something the family can do every year to be together and have fun is always a good thing.  What is nice about traditions is you can start them anytime you want.  Whether you and your family did them as kids or you started your own traditions with your own kids when you started a family, traditions are fun ways to create memories for years to come.  One tradition I’d like to share with everyone is something my family has done since I was a little kid.  The tradition of visiting a local attraction and retail store called Kraynaks.

Starting September 1st (be honest it is never too early to start thinking about Christmas) and running thru December 31st, Christmasland at Kraynaks in Hermitage Pennsylvania opens to the public.  What exactly is Christmasland you may be asking yourself?  Christmasland is a magical display of Christmas scenes using trees, lights, decorations, and simple animatronic characters.  The display runs down the hallway and as soon as you step through the Christmasland entrance you are transported to Christmas time with lights, music, and even Christmas themed scented candles. Christmasland is divided into sections and each section represents a particular theme from Santa Claus to the birth of Jesus Christ.

From Kraynaks website:

“From September 10th thru December 31st, Imagine a world of make-believe with twinkling lights, glittering trees, and a magical array of life-like characters.”Santa’s Christmas Land” is            a 300-foot, indoor starlight avenue of uniquely designed artificial Christmas trees. Each tree has a specific theme that is enhanced and complimented by surrounding scenery and a cast              of life-like animated characters.”

It really does have something everyone will enjoy.  The icing on this delicious gingerbread is at the end of Christmasland, you can find Santa Claus for your kids to sit with and if you so choose, purchase pictures to put in your scrapbook.  (Check with the store for availability of Santa Claus, he is very busy this time of year up until Christmas.)  If you do not want to purchase pictures they still let your children sit on his lap for free and tell him all of their wishes for that year.  For my family, Christmasland has been a tradition since I was a little kid.  We may have missed out a year here or there, but we always try our hardest to visit.

Christmasland is not the only fun things unique to Kraynaks.  The store also has one of the largest selection of Christmas merchandise that I have seen.  Lights, artificial trees, stockings, and everything in between.  Another tradition my family has is the picking of an ornament by the children.  Each year after we get our fill of Christmasland, we venture over to the ornament department (yes I said department, it is not just an aisle) to let the kids pick out their favorite ornament that they find.  When we finally make it home from Kraynaks, the ornaments are marked with who got them and year and placed on the tree every year thereafter.  It is really fun to look back years and see what you were into that year or what you considered to be the coolest ornament. Check out the video below from Kraynaks to get a peek of the past years display.

Overall, Kraynaks is a unique shopping experience that I always enjoy.  Besides Christmas stuff, they have a wide selection of classic toys such as train sets and die-cast vehicles.  Also, if you’re a kid or an adult, you will not mind Kraynaks’ selection of candy either.  If you are local to western Pennsylvania or traveling here from other states for the holiday season, try to put Kraynaks on your list of stops.  You will not be disappointed.
